Building the Community with the Community 

More than a physical space, Hut of Kasih Sayang is a platform for community ownership and connection. It reflects our belief that strong communities are built when residents are not just recipients of support, but active contributors in shaping the environment around them.

What began as a community fridge initiative supporting over 500 residents has grown into a broader ecosystem of mutual support. Residents are now stepping forward with ideas for interest groups, skills-sharing and peer support — signalling a shift from receiving help to contributing to the community.

Developed by Empowered Families Initiative Ltd., EFI is delivered by KKCS in our community, bringing this evidence-informed model to the families we serve. It is a 6–month programme that empowers lower-income families to take ownership of their journey and make steady progress toward their goals — whether it’s building financial sustainability, starting a home-based business, strengthening employment, or upskilling for better income.

EFI is much more than a programme. It is a community of encouragement, shared learning, and dignity.

Families journey together in a safe group setting facilitated by KKCS social workers and EFI alumni — graduates who have walked this path themselves. Seeing peers make progress gives participants confidence and hope. The group becomes a powerful source of strength, motivation, and shared problem-solving.

KKCS continues to deepen its presence in the community through sustained outreach and engagement efforts. Through outreach, our services became more visible and approachable.

At the same time, community partnerships were strengthened through regular networking sessions, bringing together service providers to better coordinate support for families.

Together, these efforts contribute to a more connected ecosystem — where support is not only available, but easier to access, navigate and sustain within the community.
